The bunker that now houses the Dunkirk 1940 Museum was built by the French army in 1874, sixty-six years before the events it commemorates. Bastion 32 sat at the base of the old fortified port, its casemates thick enough to survive Stuka raids.
In May 1940 it became the command post of Admiral Jean-Marie Abrial, from which the French defence of the perimeter was directed while British destroyers loaded troops from the East Mole a kilometre away.
Operation Dynamo ran from 26 May to 4 June 1940. Roughly 338,000 Allied soldiers left the beaches and the Mole in nine days, carried by destroyers, ferries, trawlers and the requisitioned civilian craft later called the little ships. The rearguard that held the Bergues–Furnes canal line long enough to make the lift possible was overwhelmingly French, and most of those men went into captivity. The museum occupies the bunker's original corridors rather than a purpose-built shell, and the layout matters. Low ceilings, blast walls and communication rooms remain in place; the temperature stays cool in August. Newsreel footage and radio traffic run in French and English. Full price adult admission is 8 EUR, and the doors open 10:00–18:00 every day of the week.
Outside, the geography does the rest of the teaching. The East Mole survives as a working breakwater. The dunes at Bray-Dunes still contain German blockhouses, and the wreck of a Second World War vessel is visible offshore at low tide.
