Nine days in the spring of 1940 lifted 338,226 soldiers off a single stretch of French coast. The operation took its name from the dynamo room beneath Dover Castle, where the plan was drawn, and the French command post of the Nord survives at Bastion 32 on Rue des Chantiers de France.
That squat fortification, cut into a nineteenth-century earthwork beside the old shipyards, anchors every Dunkirk WW2 Tour and now houses the Musée Dunkerque 1940 Opération Dynamo.
